Captain James Sodergren is the heart behind The Way Burials at Sea and captain of the M/V Panda, a Southern California burial-at-sea vessel dedicated to helping families honor their loved ones with care, dignity, and compassion.

A Dana Point native, James has spent most of his life on the water and continues to call this beautiful coastal community home, where he lives with his daughter. Since beginning burial-at-sea services in 2005, he has guided countless families through meaningful ocean memorials with warmth, kindness, and a deep sense of purpose.

For Captain James, this work is deeply personal. He understands that every life carries a unique story, and every farewell deserves to be handled with respect and heart.

Beyond his work at sea, James is passionate about serving his community and helping others connect with the ocean. Whether through local outreach programs, volunteering, or simply encouraging kids to step away from screens and experience the beauty of the water, he believes deeply in the healing and grounding power of nature.

Captain James began his maritime career aboard Clipper Cruise Line, where his first voyage carried him through the Panama Canal into the Caribbean. He later earned his 100-ton USCG Captain’s License while working in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and has since built a lifetime of experience both on and off the water.

In addition to his maritime background, James has served as a firefighter, lifeguard, licensed EMT, and CPR-certified first responder. He also earned his Bachelor’s degree from California State University, Fullerton.

Today, Captain James continues to help families across California and nationwide create peaceful and meaningful final resting experiences at sea.

Captain James approaches every service with care, respect, and a deep sense of purpose. Families trust him to handle this moment with the dignity it deserves.

I am here to honor your loved one and provide a service that gives clarity on how to walk through the loss of a loved one.
